The Flame of Love

Ellen Cook

Leader Editor

It isn’t often a boy gets a second chance with a girl after he stands her up.  Jay Westergard will be the first to admit he is lucky that Rowane, his wife of 60 years, has a forgiving heart.

Jay said it was an innocent mistake.  When he and a friend, coming home from a baseball game, stopped to talk to two girls in Tremonton, the conversation covered many topics, but he still doesn’t remember a date to the movies being one of them.

Rowane believes otherwise.  She said he failed to show up because he was getting even with her for refusing to carry his books into the school when he was trying to get to class on crutches.

Either way, it took Rowane just three days before she was ready to speak to her fellow classmate at Bear River High School. Good thing she did. The two eventually became high school sweethearts in spite of that very rocky beginning and were married in the Logan LDS Temple on Sept. 12, 1952.  They have lived in the valley since then and now reside in East Garland.
