The defending state champion Bear River softball squad has had its ups and downs this season, but persevered through the challenges to earn a first-round bye in the 4A state playoffs.
The Bears finished second in the final Region 11 standings and earned the No. 7 seed in the state tournament. They will host Tooele this Thursday and Friday in a three-game super regional, with the winner moving on to face either Desert Hills or Mountain Crest in bracket play on May 15.
The Bears (13-7, 6-4) wrapped up the regular season with a 9-5 victory over Logan on Tuesday, April 30. Trailing 3-2, Bear River took charge of the game with five runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Bella Douglas and Aubree Fry each had two hits and three RBIs. Katelyn Wilson struck out 14, allowed six hits and no walks in pitching a complete game.
This week’s super regional against the Buffaloes, whom the Bears defeated in 2021 to capture the 10th state championship in program history, begins at 4 p.m. Thursday in Garland. Game 2 is set for a 1 p.m. start Friday and Game 3, if necessary, will start at 4 p.m. Friday.
