The Bear River girls golf team hosted a Region 11 tournament last Thursday at Skyway Golf Course, where the Bears finished third on the strength of a couple of top-five performances.
Playing in lovely spring weather, Tylee Bennett carded an 85 to lead the Bears with a third-place finish. Teammate Abbi Nessen shot 89, good enough for fifth place.
The Bears shot 378 as a team, taking third place out of six schools. Ridgeline (352) bested Green Canyon (353), the defending region champions and last year’s second-place finisher at the 4A state tournament, by a single stroke to win the tournament. Sky View (385), Mountain Crest (435) and Logan (463) rounded out the field.
Avery Parker of Green Canyon was the individual medalist with a 78, winning by six strokes.
The girls were scheduled to play on back-to-back days this week at Birch Creek Golf Course in Smithfield on Monday and Tuesday.
BOYS TENNISBear River had two events last week, a road trip to Green Canyon on Wednesday and a home date with Logan on Thursday.
At North Logan, the Bears fell 5-0. In singles, Jack Huish of Green Canyon defeated Bear River’s Jexton Bodrero (6-0, 6-1); Chad Jeppson topped Will Mickelson (6-0, 6-1); and Emerson Strebel bested Jacob McKee (6-1, 6-0).
In doubles, Jake Pierson and Johnny Bingham prevailed over Easton Johnson and Tucker Larson (6-0, 6-0); and Ian Olson and Dylan Baxter beat Rhiley Griffin and Beck Burrell (6-1, 6-0).
On Thursday in Garland, the Grizzlies came out on top 4-1. The Bears’ lone victory came from Lawrence Rigby, who defeated Logan’s Kort Larsen (6-2, 6-7, 6-0). Logan won the other four matches, including singles wins by Dohoon Kwag over Bodrero (6-0, 6-1) and Tereck Thomson over Mickelson (6-0, 6-2).
In doubles, Caleb Xu and Easton Jenkins defeated Johnson and Larson (6-0, 6-0); and Tyton Ellis and Mylo Steele bested Griffin and Burrell (6-1, 6-0).
BOYS SOCCERThe Bear River boys soccer team fell to 0-3 in Region 11 play last week following shutout losses to Logan and Ridgeline.
At Logan on Tuesday, both teams went scoreless in the first half. Two second-half scores by the Grizzlies proved to be the difference.
The Bears hosted Ridgeline on Thursday, when the Riverhawks scored twice in each half for a 4-0 win. Tate Hickman had two goals and Ivan Leon had a goal and two assists, with Owen Dushku getting the fourth score.
This week, the Bears (1-5, 0-3) were scheduled to play at Green Canyon on Tuesday and will host Sky View on Thursday with a 7 p.m. start time in Garland.
BOYS VOLLEYBALLThe inaugural boys volleyball season has been a trial by fire for Bear River, which has yet to win a set, let alone a match.
Last week, the Bears traveled to Hyrum to face Mountain Crest. The Mustangs won 25-14, 25-13, 25-15 for the sweep. Bridger Barfuss had four kills for Bear River, Braxon Scott, Carter Wilkinson and Austin Palmer each had three blocks, and Riley Hunter had 14 digs.
On Thursday in Garland, Ridgeline swept the Bears 25-7, 25-11, 25-19.
This week, Bear River (0-7, 0-5) was scheduled to play at Sky View on Tuesday and will host Green Canyon on Thursday. First service is slated for 6 p.m. at Memorial Gymnasium in Garland.
