Box Elder County officials are warning local residents of a telephone scam in which the caller identifies themself as an employee of the county sheriff’s office and demands payment for a warrant.
“We would like to remind everyone that The Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office will never make such a demand,” a post on the Box Elder County Facebook page reads. “Please do not fall victim to this scam.”
Scammers can manipulate caller ID, and calls may falsely appear to come from police, government agencies or utility companies.
Recent scams have included phone calls, emails and text messages instructing recipients to purchase prepaid gift or debit cards, cryptocurrency or money orders, or to make bank wire transfers to pay law enforcement for bail; the IRS for owed taxes; utility companies to avoid service interruption; immigration officials to avoid deportation or arrest; Social Security officials for for fraudulent activity, warrants or arrests involving the use of Social Security numbers; ransom; and hospitals for emergency treatment of a loved one.
One well-known scam targeting the elderly involves a caller impersonating a grandchild and asking for money to help them get out of some kind of jam.
The county encourages people who receive such questionable calls to “just hang up.”
