For the Leader
When current Tremonton City Youth Council Mayor Abby Payne was in elementary school, she had a problem. She loved to read.
Not that her reading was a bad thing. She just loved it so much that she could rarely find anything new to read after plowing through books at her school library and the Tremonton City Library that were in her age category.
“I always loved to read,” she said. “But it was hard to go to the library and find anything I wanted to read or hadn’t read before.”
Now, using her role as youth council mayor, she’s hoping to make sure no other elementary-aged kids encounter the same problem.
Payne and her fellow members of the Tremonton City Youth Council are holding a fundraiser on Wednes-day, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Tremonton City Library titled “For the Love of Literacy.” The event will feature local authors Ronda Hinrichsen, author of books like “Missing” and “Trapped,” and Josi Kilpack, author of the “Sadie Hoffmiller Culinary Mystery” series. Cost for the event is $5 per person, with all proceeds going to purchase books geared toward K-5 children for the library. Also, local author Mark Bingham will be in attendance.
During the event, the authors will be signing books and have copies available to sell. They will also be presenting lectures dealing with reading and writing, which should make the event interesting to all readers and writers from young to old.
“We are excited to have these authors come,” advisor Cindy Payne said. “We feel it’s important to provide service to the community, and we want to do this service and give back to our community.”
