It was indeed a surprising twist at Wednesday night’s school board meeting.
Box Elder School Board President Nancy Kennedy moved to rescind the motion made a couple of weeks ago to not close Bunderson Elementary in Brigham City. Then in another motion she moved to close the neighborhood school.
This was stark contrast to a few weeks ago when Kennedy was the fourth member of the board to vote against Bunderson’s closure.
With Kennedy flipping sides, the motion to close the school passed by a 5-2 vote. Connie Archibald, Heather Young, Lynn Capener and Kevin Packer all voted for the closure. Packer also voted against the closure last meeting. Bryan Smith and Jim Fuller voted against Kennedy’s proposal.
With the motion passed the school now must plan for its future, including closing its doors at the end of June.
In other action, the board reviewed potential budget cuts and agreed to not cut aide monies as well as keep athletic trainers in place.
