The volunteer fire department that has provided coverage for the Howell community for many years has been dissolved. Residents there will now be served by Thatcher or Snowville fire crews.
The Howell town council made the decision to disband the department after the fire chief moved away and the department could not find enough personnel to man the equipment, according to Box Elder County fire marshal Corey Barton. He also said the few remaining volunteers did not have adequate training to properly respond to fire calls.
“They (the council) made the decision because of the liability they faced without trained personnel,” Barton added.
Howell had two county-owned brush trucks and a water tender, which were returned to the county.
