Saturday was a bad day to be a car thief in Box Elder County.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers arrested two suspects in two different stolen car incidents on Saturday evening, one a 15-year-old male from Logan taken into custody at gunpoint, and the other a 38-year-old female from Idaho.
The first incident happened around 6:45 p.m., in Tremonton, when a man left his 2007 Nissan Altima running and entered El Parral restaurant momentarily. The vehicle was gone when he returned. A family member witnessed the theft and followed the suspect eastbound on SR-30 into Cache County, giving location updates by cellphone along the way.
A UHP trooper came in contact with the stolen vehicle near 1400 W., just entering Logan, and attempted to initiate a stop. The driver accelerated and the trooper followed for about two blocks before discontinuing the pursuit, due to the proximity to the city.
The suspect then continued into Logan City at a high rate of speed, clocked by a Cache County deputy at 81 mph in a 30 mph zone. The vehicle turned northbound on 100 W. and then westbound on 500 N.
On 200 W., the UHP trooper again activated his lights and the suspect vehicle was stopped in the middle of the road, boxed in by a UHP vehicle at the front bumper and a Logan city patrol car at the rear bumper.
The teen, who is listed as a runaway, was removed from the stolen vehicle at gunpoint and placed into custody. He was turned over to the Tremonton City police and booked into Cache County Juvenile Detention for the theft. He faces additional charges in Cache County. The vehicle was returned to the owner.
Just minutes after the first reported car theft, at 6:57 p.m., Idaho State Police requested assistance on a stolen 1999 Ford Taurus equipped with GPS reportedly located one mile into Utah at the Juniper rest area. An Idaho police officer had located the vehicle leaving the rest area and was able to make the stop. Two UHP troopers assisted in the arrest of Joyele M. Fink, 38, of Idaho. She was transported to the Box Elder County Jail on Possession of Stolen Vehicle charges. Idaho authorities will work with Utah on filing their own charges.
