Senior Kaden Sidwell is the driving force behind getting this sport going at the school. Sidwell moved to Tremonton his junior year and wanted to find a way to share his athletic abilities. “Rugby caught my eye,” he said.
He began forming a team, but it wasn’t until October that things began to come together “Ever since then it has been non-stop,” he said. “Once football and basketball ended, the interest in Rugby exploded.”
Bear River business teacher David Smith helped Sidwell put together a website, while he and his friends worked on recruiting.
Then the quest for a coach began. Sidwell’s post onFacebook caught the eye of Perry Crawford, who played varsity rugby for four years at Brigham Young University in the 80s and was the team captain.
With a team and coach in place, it was time to get the proper funding. The team held fundraisers and met with the president of the Utah Youth Rugby organization, who offered tips on how to get the club going.
“I feel it has gone exceptionally well,” Sidwell said. “It fell into place like it was suppose to. I had no idea it would work out so well. A lot of guys were skeptical but it took off and worked out great.”
