About 2:30 p.m. today a shop fire was reported in Beaver Dam on the Box Elder/Cache County line at 15100 N. 400 W. Fielding, Garland and Plymouth fire departments on the Box Elder side and Mendon and Wellsville tenders from the Cache County side all responded, as did the Box Elder County fire marshal and Tremonton ambulance. According to Corey Barton, Emergency Services, the structure housed a lazer etching and woodworking shop owned by the Rucker family. The owner was working on a laser project inside and left for a few minutes. When he returned, the shop was completely engulfed, the result of what Barton called “a flameout.” Due to the nature of the building’s makeup and its content, all wood, “it spread very quickly. It was a hot, nasty fire,” Barton said. The first priority of fire crews was to keep the flames from the residence nearby. “We managed that,” Barton said, although the home’s vinyl siding was heavily damaged. The shop and contents was a complete loss, with damage estimated at about $100,000. This was a difficult fire to fight as no water hydrants are located in that area of the county.
