Ballard leads as Bears top swimmer

The Bear River swim team got back into the swing as they hosted Uintah and then traveled to compete in the Logan Invite. Uintah dominated the Bears, defeating them 241-81. The women’s score was 43-118, while the men had a harder time, 38-123.

The team will travel to Tooele on Thursday, Jan. 16, and then will host Layton and Northridge on Tuesday, Jan. 21, with the meet beginning at 3 p.m.

Against Uintah, Kenna Coppenger placed second in the 100m fly at 1:34.74. Morgan Schneiter finished third in the 100m breast with a time of 1:51.53.

The lone Bear River girl to get a first place finish was Meagan Ballard in the 100m free with a time of 1:12.57. Alexa Walters finished close behind in second place, 1:14.84. Ballard also placed second in the 50m free, 30.79, with Walters again right behind in third at 32.62.

In the 200m medley relay the team of Ballard, Coppenger, Schneiter and Walters finished in second place with their time of 2:33.97. The same team also swam in the 200m free relay and finished in a strong first place at 2:17.88.

Payton Ellis proved his power on the boys’ team as he took first place in the 200m IM at 2:37.04. The 50m free saw Zachary Thomas in third place at 29.97.

The 400m free gave Casey Palmer third place at 5:47.72, with Mookey Owen also taking third in the 100m back with a time of 1:26.94. In the 100m breast Thomas placed second at 1:30.89.

In the 200-meter medley relay, the team of Palmer, Cutler Ellis, Payton Ellis and Thomas placed third at 2:17.74. In the 200m free relay, the Bears team composed of Robert Crawford, Thomas, Palmer and Payton Ellis took second, 2:00.86.

The final event of the 400m free relay saw the team of Buttars, Gonzales, Cutler Ellis and Crawford finishing third at 5:15.48.

The Logan Invite had eleven teams competing. The schools are listed in their combined team total scores and placed as follows: Logan, Box Elder, Weber, East High, Copper Hills, Uintah, Juan Diego, Ogden, Bear River, West Jordan and Summit Academy.

The Bear River women finished eighth with a score of 99, while the men placed ninth, 65.

Meagan Ballard was the only Bear to finish in top five spots. In the 50-yard free, Ballard finished fourth at 27.72, and placed third in the 100-yard free with a time of 1:00.08. Below are more results from the invite.

100-yard breast: Cutler Ellis 23rd; Thomas 27th; Buttars 45th
