Talk about a thrilling season opener and first game for new head coach Scott Hunt. You had that and more as the Bears clawed to a huge 67-61 win over the Sky View Bobcats in Smithfield Wednesday night.
Senior point guard Landon Cornwall came up huge for the Bears, canning a career-high 34 points to lead the Bears. Senior Nick Hillis and junior McKade Mitton added 10 points each. Sky View was paced by junior guard Riley Panter, with 17 points.
The Bears had a chance to seal the win in regulation with Cornwall on the foul line and up by two, but he only managed to make one of two charity shots and the Bobcats nailed a buzzer-beating three to send it into overtime tied at 48 all.
The two teams scrapped for points in the first overtime but neither could pull away and were tied again at 54 all, then 58-58 after the second OT. The Bears finally found the answer to the Cats’ tough defense and, behind Cornwall’s free throw shooting, sealed the win.
The Bears now look forward to a match up at home with former region rival Ogden on Tuesday.
