Stallions roll past Bears

Bear River is coming off a second disappointing region loss. Last week’s game against Stansbury had some great plays for the Bears, but the Stallions got the 34-22 win. With the loss the Bears dropped to 3-3 on the season and 1-2 in the region. Bear River just finished its toughest stretch of the season with Box Elder, Juan Diego, and Stansbury within a four game span.

This Friday the Bears will be at 1-5 Payson from the 3AA South Region. Payson has been within striking distance in many of its games, but just hasn’t been able to make the crucial plays it takes to get wins. Bear River’s stellar offense will try to keep a healthy scoring margin in its favor against a defense that has given up well over 30 points per game.

At home last Friday the Stallions got on the board first with a 20-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Bears answered with a 70-yard touchdown pass from JarDee Nessen to Colton Jensen. Bear River took its only lead of the game on a 2-point try by McKade Mitton, 8-7.

Stansbury scored the next touchdown, taking a 14-8 lead into halftime. The Bears found it difficult to move the ball against a strong Stallion defense. The Bears wouldn’t find pay dirt again until another huge play from Nessen to Jensen that went for a 97-yard touchdown.

Nessen was 13 for 37 on the night for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Nessen also ran for a score. Jensen caught eight passes for 240 yards and ran for an amazing 202 yards after the catch.

The Bears scored their final touchdown on a 2-yard run from Nessen. Jared Olsen made both of his extra-point kicks.

Cole Fronk snagged an interception and returned it 21 yards. Mitton had a fumble recovery, 15 tackles, 1.5 sacks and three tackles for losses. Parker Lewis had 10 tackles, a sack and four tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The Bear River defense held Stansbury to just 2 for 11 on third downs. The Bears also held the Stallions to only 74 yards through the air.

The Bears trail Juan Diego (3-0), Stansbury (3-0) and Park City (2-0) in the region standings.
