A week after one of the highest scoring games in Utah high school history the Bears had a difficult time scoring against a stingy Soaring Eagle defense. Bear River lost to Juan Diego 45-13. The Bears are now 1-1 in region play with a 3-2 record overall.
Two weeks ago Bear River quarterback JarDee Nessen threw for a new school record of 492 yards and seven touchdowns. Those are also 3AA records.
This Friday the Bears will host a very good Stansbury team that also stands at 3-2 this season. The Stallions are 2-0 in region play.
Coach Chris Wise feels like this is a great week to play Stansbury and said, “It was a good thing for us to just play a team that runs the veer because now we’ll go up against Stansbury who also runs the veer.” Wise mentioned that in last week’s game the defense played pretty well against the veer, but going against a good option team sometimes one great block or run can go for a score.
Juan Diego came into the game touted as one of the state’s best teams. Wise said, “I think they’re probably one of the top teams in the state, not just in 3AA but going up against anybody. “
Juan Diego showed it. The Bears kept themselves in the game early and played well. “I felt good about our opportunities early,” said Wise. “It’s a game of inches—I know that’s coach talk—but a few inches on a pass and we make a catch, or a few inches on a run and we have a first down. That really could have made a difference. I think the biggest thing is we need to come out faster.”
Offensively the Bears totaled just 216 yards after going for nearly 700 the week before. Nessen threw for 160 yards and a pair of touchdowns last week, the only TD’s for the home team.
Defensively McKade Mitton was great. He finished with 16 tackles in the game. Tanner Porter had an interception, and Wade Detwiler recovered a fumble. Garrett Jeppesen had a sack for the Bears.
Branson Fonnesbeck was injured early in the game. Hayden Hammons was called in to replace him and did a good job stepping in for such an important player.
Colton Jensen caught four passes for 61 yards and a touchdown. Brady Parker also had a touchdown reception for the Bears.
