Bear River suffered a big loss at the hands of Box Elder last Friday night, 55-28. It was a close game early, but the bigger Bees took care of business as the game wore on. Bear River is 2-1 as they head into region play.

Bear River will play their first game in the 3AA North Region on the road at Tooele this Friday. The Buffaloes are 1-2 this season and are coming off a big win against Canyon View.

The Bees got off to a good start with a 76-yard touchdown drive to open the game. JarDee Nessen led the Bears downfield to match Box Elder’s drive and found Cole Fronk on a 16-yard touchdown connection.

A big kick return put the Bears in a poor position defensively. Box Elder scored quickly on a 22-yard touchdown run. The Bears went three-and-out and then had their punt blocked, once again giving the Bees great field position. Box Elder capitalized in just four plays and the Bears found themselves behind, 21-7.

Nessen led the Bears down the field once again behind a 59-yard pass to Fronk. On third and one from the two-yard line McKade Mitton punched through for a Bear River touchdown. A try for two points failed and the scoreboard read 21-13 for Box Elder near the end of the first quarter.

Box Elder would score on their next possession with nearly unstoppable ground attack. With the Bears playing so many players on both sides of the ball it was evident the Bees would often be getting to the second level of the defense.

Offense wasn’t any easier than defense for the Bears for the rest of the first half. They saw their drives end in an interception, punt and fumble. At halftime the Bears were down 42-13.

One of the bright spots for the Bears was the passing game. Nessen threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns. Colton Jensen had 11 catches for 130 yards and a score. Fronk caught six balls for 111 yards and a touchdown. Defensively Mitton continued to dominate. He was a factor in most plays and accounted for 14 tackles on 53 plays.
On Bear River’s first drive of the second half the Bears drove to the Box Elder one-yard line, but were stuffed at the goal line on fourth down. The Bear River defense responded by forcing and recovering a fumble. Nessen ran for a touchdown to cap the short drive. Jared Olsen ran the ball in for a two-point conversion. Box Elder led 42-21.

Bear River finished its scoring for the night when Nessen hit Jensen for a short pass that Jensen took the rest of the way for a touchdown. Olsen’s kick was good for Bear River’s 28th point. Olsen’s leg was on point in the game especially with all of the touchbacks.
