Counterfeit bills passed, woman arrested

Sprouse mugA California woman was booked into the Box Elder County Jail on nine counts of passing counterfeit bills after an alert clerk at the Tremonton Family Dollar store recognized the repeat customer.

Tremonton Police Chief David Nance said Carol M. Sprouse, 45, of Turlock, Calif., was arrested Thursday, July 18, after police found six counterfeit $100 bills in her possession when they made contact with her at the store.  The woman had allegedly passed a bogus $100 bill the week before in the Family Dollar and the clerk on duty recognized her from the previous transaction and called police.   Nance credits that clerk for helping bring the woman into custody.

Nance said counterfeit $100 bills had also been passed locally in Alco and Ridley’s.  With her arrest, the woman  admitted to passing other bills in Salt Lake City and Riverdale.

The Secret Service was brought in on the investigation, according to Nance, and may be able to tie Sprouse to several other outstanding cases where the same serial numbers were used on the counterfeit money.

Sprouse  was also found in possession of two meth pipes.

Nance said Sprouse has ties to Box Elder County and was staying with relatives.

She tried to rent me the house also. It was a very scary and strange situation. The sign is down now. I hope she didn’t rip anyone off. I think she was just looking for money to run on these charges against her.

She was arrested and has made all her court dates. The house rental deal was all legitimate. She was not trying to rip anyone off on the house rental. She made some mistakes and will do whatever punishment is given to her. Hopefully she learned from her mistake.
