Cox continues search for daughter

After more than three years, Chuck Cox is still hoping to find answers to questions in the disappearance of his daughter, Susan Cox Powell. Susan went missing from West Valley City on Dec. 7, 2009, and her husband, Josh Powell, is considered by Cox to be the person responsible. Josh Powell killed himself and the couple’s two children on Feb. 5, 2012.
With the recent release of documents and information collected by West Valley City police, Cox believes the corridor from Tremonton to Pendleton, Oregon, may hold the answers he is seeking. He was in Box Elder County Wednesday to continue the search, distribute flyers and attempt to generate leads.
“Legally, she is still alive,” Cox said, in an interview at the Tremonton Leader. “If I can’t find her, I can’t say she is dead, but I strongly suspect it.”
Studying the evidence gathered by the police, including the fact that Josh activated his cellphone on Dec. 8 in Tremonton, Cox thinks Josh Powell was helped by his brother, Michael Powell, who committed suicide in February 2013, and the two may have disposed of his daughter’s body during an 18-hour window sometime on Dec.8-9, along the I-84 route. Josh would have been in a rented 2009 gray Ford Focus, while Michael was driving a 1997 gray Ford Taurus.
He hopes seeing the flyers may trigger a memory in someone who may have noticed either or both vehicles parked along the highway, at a rest area or on a back road.
“Somewhere along the line I think we are going to find our daughter,” he said. “I’m optimistic.”
Cox added that while the police have suspended their end of the investigation, the case is still very much open.
“I’m confident if I had a tip, they would follow up on it.”
