As of July 1, there will be four new administrators within Box Elder School District. During the last school board meeting, board members accepted Corey Thompson as principal at Young Intermediate School, Colleen Shaffer as principal at Harris Intermediate School, Kristi Capener as principal of Bear River High School and Jeremy Young as principal of Mountain View Elementary School.
The administrative intern program will begin next year with Bear River Middle School having the first candidate. The goal is to have personnel who have filled the requirements to also have the experience needed to step into the administrative positions in the future.
Those participating are not guaranteed a position and will return to their original position as teacher if not chosen for administrative position within the year or two training period.
Board members debated the addition of a $10 fee to high school students enrolled in the pre-engineering classes to begin next year at the high schools.
Board member Nancy Kennedy said that although she supported the addition of the classes and the goal of the STEM program, she felt students should show their commitment and pay a fee as other elective classes do.
Kennedy said too much district money is being spent on a program that only 230 students have elected to take. Karen Cronin reminded board members of the contributions and commitments being made by community businesses to the STEM program.
