A 59-year-old Brigham City grandmother, Debra Mercer, died and her three grandchildren suffered injures in an auto-pedestrian accident Thursday afternoon.
Brigham City Police Lt. Dennis Vincent said the accident occurred at 2:47 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, at the intersection of 700 S. and Main Street. According to witnesses, a 36-year-old female was traveling southbound in a Ford Focus through a green light when an 87-year-old female in the northbound turning lane turned the Sonata she was driving in front of the Focus.
The collision sent the Sonata into a spin and up onto the sidewalk where it struck the victim, who was pushing a stroller, and the three children, ages seven, four and two.
The four were transported by ambulance to Brigham City Community Hospital, where the victim was pronounced dead. The three juveniles were listed in stable condition.
Vincent said the driver of the Sonata was taken to the hospital by private vehicle, complaining of shoulder pain. She was also reported to be in stable condition. The driver of the Focus was not injured.
The incident will now be turned over to the city attorney, who will determine if charges will be filed, Vincent said.
