Morgan holds off Bears in state championship game
Bear River and Morgan matched up for the third time this year and with all the chips on the table, the Trojans were the ones with the hot hand, rolling to a state 3A championship with a 58-44 win over BR.
The Bears held Morgan’s scoring machine Jake Miles to only 16 points, but Garren Miles added 12 and Bridger Streadbeck 10 for Morgan. Kyle Zundel paced BR with 10 and Kody King added 7. Austin Miller pitched in for 6. Bubba Miller, who had been on a tear of late and was averaging over 20 points per game, was held to only 5 as the Bears struggled with their shooting.
The Trojans came out hot and had a 12-4 lead with 2:56 to go in the first quarter. They eventually built an 18-8 lead after the first period. Trojans doing a good job defending Bubba Miller.
They stretched that to 26-14 lead at half as the Bears couldn’t seem to make outside shots. King has 5 and Stetson Summers 4 for the Bears. Bubba Miller was held scoreless.
It was more of the same for Morgan in the third. Miles was fouled on the shot then BR was called for a technical foul. The Trojans built up a 42-20 lead with 2:30 to go in the third.
From there it was all cruise control for the Trojans who won their school’s first state basketball championship ever. For the Bears, they settle for second in their first time back in the state championship game since 2009.
