The Bear River wrestling team now prepares for the Utah 3A State Championships, held at Utah Valley University this coming weekend. It will be the third-straight weekend of big wrestling tournaments as the Bears captured the Region 11 title two weeks ago and placed third at the 3A North-Central Divisional Tournament last weekend.
The Bears tallied 235 points, trailing only Delta (313) and Payson (260.5). Senior BroDee Stevenson garnered top honors as he proved to be the champion in the 285-pound weight class, beating his first opponent 13-1 before pinning his way to the title. Senior Dominic Kunder (126) and sophomore Nick Bingham (113) also made their way to the championship match and suffered narrow defeats to wrestlers from Delta.
Five wrestlers place third in their weight including seniors Tanner Vanvalkenburg (132), Tanner Christensen (145), R. Jay Christensen (152) and Chad Hornberger (182), as well as junior Kyle Peterson (195). Senior Dalyn Bergman (160) and sophomore Toby Haltiner (145) rounded out the top-four placers for the Bears.
Other top-six placers for the Bears at the divisional tournament included seniors Chris Hernandez (5th-113), Brady Haramoto (5th-120), Tony Carreno (5th-220) and Juan Arteaga (5th-285), along with junior Justus Wise (6th-220).
