Tremonton couple blooms where planted

Ellen Cook

Allan and Erma Barfuss find joy in life’s simple pleasures – growing sunflowers, collecting salt and pepper shakers, being with family and offering service.  The Tremonton couple have done all of the above and more during nearly 60 years of marriage and they are content with the returns and happy with the memories that have resulted.

The two are lifelong Valley people, having grown up less than a mile from each other, and now live just “down the road” from those childhood homes.  Though their realm or residences have remained somewhat limited, it doesn’t mean their lives haven’t been filled with an adventure or two over the years.

The journey began when the two married in 1953.  Just 40 days later Allan shipped off to Korea with the Army and Erma moved back home with her folks.  “I don’t even think I asked them if I could or not,” she laughed.  “But I’d only been gone a month.”

That situation would remain the same for nearly two years as Allan kept the peace in a distant land and Erma kept the home fires burning.  During that time she also received her first set of salt and pepper shakers from a brother who was serving in the Navy.  That simple gift has blossomed into an impressive collection numbering well over 200 sets, featuring everything from finely handcrafted wooden shakers to whimsical ceramic seasoning holders in all shapes and styles.

When Allan returned from his tour of duty, the couple purchased a small one bedroom home and lots of farm ground.  As the family grew, so did the house.  “We built on to it three times,” Allan said, making it a comfortable place to raise their five children (three girls and two boys). While Erma kept food on the table at the Barfuss home (“She is an excellent cook,” Allan said), Allan, a farmer, was kept busy raising produce for the rest of the country.
