The Bear River volleyball team held their senior night and final match hosting Tooele on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
“I was very pleased with how the girls played,” coach Megan Cooper stated. “They fought and gave it everything and they walked away from that match with no regrets and that was their goal.”
The Bears ended up losing 25-27, 27-25, 25-27 and 15-25.
The Bears had played Tooele in September and had lost in three sets. Cooper said, “I talked with Tooele’s coach a few days after we played them and she couldn’t believe our girls. They were a whole different team from the first time we played each other.”
The top server was Caitlin Wiggins who had 12 points with three aces. Alyssa Park had nine points, two aces and Monica Olsen with six points, one ace.
Park had 12 kills while Stephany Peterson had nine and Wiggins, five. Park also had a whopping 16 digs while Samantha Getz had 13. Monica Olsen had nine digs and Michelle Davis had eight. Peterson also had two solo blocks and Getz had two with Olsen coming up with one.
The 2012 seniors for this season included Stephany Peterson, Caitlin Wiggins, Monica Olsen and Kelsee Hancock.
When asked about the season, Cooper said, “Going into this season I knew we would be rebuilding. We were very young in experience. My focus for the girls was to work on breaking down the basic skills and learning how to refocus our mental energy when we play.”
The theme for the year was “Practice with Purpose, Play with Passion,” and Cooper had utilized that during practices. She said, “We had a lot of ups and downs with figuring what worked best for this group of girls, but I feel like each practice and match we were able to improve and become a stronger team. I do think the girls finally figured out the groove that works for them even though we were farther into the season than we would of like to be by the time we did.”
After the Tooele match the girls and coaches had a great talk about the things they accomplished this season. Cooper said she’s excited to be able to transfer it right into next season. “This group of girls have no boundaries for the success they can reach in the coming seasons and it will be exciting to watch them reach it.”
