A Box Elder County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man in Corinne after he reportedly attempted to run over the officer Friday night.  Sheriff Lynn Yeates said the incident began when the suspect, who has been identified as 52-year-old Troy Clark Burkinshaw of Sandy, was stopped by the officer for public urination on Hwy. 13 east of Corinne.  When the officer returned to his vehicle to check out the identification the man gave, the man took off, heading west into Corinne.

A chase ensued around several streets in town, with the suspect alledgedly attempting to hit the deputy’s vehicle several times.  Yeates said the pursuit ended up down a dead end street near the Corinne Cemetery.  When the officer got out of his patrol vehicle to confront the suspect, he reportedly tried to run him over, at which time the deputy shot mutiple times, fatally wounded the man.

Yeates said outside agencies are handling the investigation, which is standard protecol, as is putting the officer on administrative leave until that investigation is completed.     Dash cams are standard equipment in all patrol vehicles in his department, Yeates added.

The name given to the officer by the man during the initial stop was not his actual name and his vehicle, a Volkswagon Passat, was registered out of Sanpete County, Yeates said.
