Widdison solidifies stranglehold on club championship

It only took a year, but Marlin Widdison moved back atop the rankings after winning the Skyway Golf men’s club championship Sunday in Tremonton.

Widdison carded a 69, 72 – 141 to easily outpace last year’s champion, Shawn Sessions, by five strokes. This makes seven club championships in 10 years.

“I was pleased with the way I putted both days,” Widdison said after his score was posted. “I didn’t hit the ball well yesterday [from the tee or fairway].”

Holding a three shot lead after Saturday’s play, Widdison set a goal to shoot even par. “I felt that would be good enough [to win].”

Players like Widdison praised the condition of the course for the weekend, mentioning Del Ericson for his efforts to make it in top shape. Nish Rock, a major sponsor this year, also received recognition from the club.

Troy Richardson claimed first flight honors with a two-round total of 155.

“I played consisted and kept it under 80 [both days],” said Richardson. “It was a good day. I got in trouble and then got out of it. It seemed a lot easier [round] today.”

Richardson usually played in the championship flight but a change in the handicap breaks this year placed him in the first flight. “I’ll take it [the win]. I haven’t been playing as much as I used to,” Richardson said.

For Widdison he is already planning on defending his title next year. Two of his main competitors weren’t in the field this year [Jared Woodward and Ty Prom], but he added the other players were very capable of winning.

“These guys [Skyway membership] inspires me to work harder this year than before. We have a friendly rivalry and the competition makes me work harder,” said Widdison, who was off to qualify for the Utah Open on Monday.
