Bears open season with convincing win
By Greg Madson
It may not have been pretty, but the Bears will take it after posting a 27-12 win over the North Sanpete Hawks on Friday night in Garland.
Both teams combined for 16 official penalties, but several others were declined, making yellow the least favorite color of the day.
The Bears scored first on a 9 yard Kyle Zundel run at the 5:54 mark of the first quarter. The PAT was no good and the Bears led 6-0. The Hawks came back at the 6:42 mark of the second quarter, scoring from 7 yards out to tie the score at 6-all. Zundel came right back with a 57 yard scoring romp, giving the Bears a 13-6 lead at the half.
With 8:09 to go in the third the Bears lead 20-9 after a 13 yard pass from Zundel to Garrett Fronk. Then the Bears scored again. This time on a 35-yd Zundel pass to Colton Jensen with 1:44 to go in third.
The Hawks added a meaningless score at the buzzer as the Bears emptied their bench.
The Bears now travel to Preston to take on the Indians, a team they beat last year. The Indians are motivated to return the favor as they open their season with a new coach and a revamped lineup. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Make sure to follow the game on the Leader’s Facebook site for in game updates. www.facebook.com/tremonton
