The body of an unidentified female was discovered by campers in the Dock Flat area south of Mantua Friday night and Box Elder County investigators are trying to determine if it is the body of Jenny Atkinson, a 31-year-old Brigham City woman, who has been missing since mid-July.
Kevin Potter, chief deputy with the department, said they are waiting to hear the outcome of an autopsy by the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office to see if the decomposed remains found in a steep ravine are that of the missing woman, and if so, the cause of her death.
Atkinson, a single mother with cerebral palsy, was last seen on July 17, when she dropped off her 12-year-old son at a friend’s house. At the time, she was driving a blue Scion. Potter said that car was found by a family friend not far from when the body was recovered and reported it to the family earlier on Friday. It was about 6 p.m., Friday night, when a group of young campers playing in the ravine came upon the body and called 9-1-1. Both events happened independent of each other, he said.
Potter also noted there have been two separate investigations ongoing, one being the missing person’s case handled by the Brigham City police department after her disappearance was reported July 23, and the other being the discovery of the body, under the authority of the sheriff’s office.
“We will now be putting our information together on this,” Potter concluded.
