Leader Assistant Editor
Kim and Beverly Yates have spent the past 24 years turning their yard into a beautiful arrangement filled with plenty of trees, rocks and flowers, providing them with a mountain get-away right in their own yard. Not only is their yard spacious and pleasing to the eye it also provided a child friendly environment, which is almost maintenance free.
When Kim and Beverly Yates, 4795 W. 8000 N., Elwood, heard they had been selected as the Leader residence Green Arrow Award recipients, they thought, “Why did we ever get nominated.”
Kim said, “I figured our yard is not that great.” Beverly added, “I love our yard. I thought it was nice someone would think of it.”
Kim and Beverly both grew up in rural communities on farms, learning very quickly from their parents how to work hard. They both decided they wanted their children to learn the same. So they worked as a family in the yard developing this quality.
Kim and Beverly have always made decisions about their home and yard together, but each take on a different role for maintaining it. Beverly maintains the flowers and weeding, while Kim mows, waters and grows the vegetables, along with “whatever she tells me to do.”
When they first started their yard, Beverly poured over books. From there she looked at other people’s yards to get ideas. She also has a lot of friends who have helped her find a passion for yard work.
