“Breathtaking.” That was the only word Louise Checketts could find to describe the calling she and her husband, Preston, recently received from Thomas S. Monson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “We’re just common folks. It took both our breaths away.”
That speechless feeling may not go away any time soon. The Checketts, residents of Bear River City, have been called as the first president and matron of the nearly completed Brigham City LDS Temple. That temple dedication is set for Sept. 23, of this year.
The call, which was issued through President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the LDS Presidency, is as surprising as it is unique, Preston Checketts said. “Most temple presidents receive the call to a functioning temple. This one is brand new. There are staffing issues, mechanical stuff, so much behind the scenes. It’s really overwhelming. It has been a whirlwind the last three weeks.”
