Suicide A local concern

Second in a three-part series on suicide and its effect on families and the community

Suicides don’t occur without precursors. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression, bipolar disorder and substance abuse are the three largest risk factors for suicidal thoughts. Family life, including exposure to violence, family substance abuse and family history of suicide are also important risk factors.

Last week’s article mentioned triggers or stressors that contribute to suicidal thoughts. This article looks into several of these risk factors.
What is Bullying?
Bullying is abuse, physical, verbal or emotional. This could be pushing or shoving, name-calling or being made fun of for how you look or what you’re wearing. Some might also try to force you to do things you don’t want to do, like drinking alcohol, smoking or taking drugs. This can happen at work, school, church or online in places like Facebook.
Don’t keep bullying a secret. Talk with someone you trust. Report the incident at work or school. Kids, ask for help from a teacher, counselor or parent. Block the person who is bullying you online.
What is Domestic Violence?
Domestic Violence is abusive behaviors between family members or between a boyfriend and girlfriend (romantic relationship). They can be physical, sexual, verbal and/or emotional. The person who is abusive is trying to have control over the person they are abusing.
Everyone deserves to be in a safe and healthy relationship, free from fear and violence. You didn’t do anything to deserve the abuse. No matter what the abuser says, hurting someone is wrong and needs to stop. If you are abusing, take responsibility by getting help for yourself.
If you are experiencing abuse, talk to someone you trust.  Report the abuse to the police. You can also contact the New Hope Crisis Center in Brigham City, 435-723-5600.
