The Bear River girls’ softball team took on Spanish Fork today for a chance to advance to the 3A state championship round. After a hard fought game the Bears fell to the Dons 4-3, ending their unprecedented quest for a sixth straight state championship.

The Bears lead 1-0 in the first inning on a score by Brenna Hink, who stole home. The Dons answered back with a run in the top of the second.

The Bears scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Oaklie Rhodes stole home, just sneaking by the catcher on a slide, 2-1.

The Bears plated another run in the bottom of the fifth on a Dons error, allowing Sierra Detwiler to knock a triple as Bailee Trapp scored, 3-1.

In the sixth inning the Dons score two to tie the game 3-3. Jordan Theurer, who was fighting an injury, was relieved by Kenzi Summers at pitcher in the sixth. With bases loaded Summers walked a batter allowing the Dons to score another run, 4-3, before Theurer made a double play at first to end the inning.

They held the Dons scoreless in the seventh with hopes to make their comeback. It looked as if they were not going to get a chance to score when the Dons got two quick outs on a fly balls by Erin Fox and Theurer. Trapp was walked and Detwiler hit a single but a big error allowed speed up runner Ashlee Kent to get to third. It was a close play but she was safe.

On the next play the Dons made another error at first but were able to recover. Although Bear fans thought the runner was safe at first the umpire called her out to end the game and the Bears’ dreams of playing in the championship game as they lost 4-3.

Stansbury’s rock solid defense and hard hitting bats were too much for the Bear River girl’s softball team as the Bears lost 6-2 in the 3A semifinals Friday afternoon.
The Bears will face Spanish Fork Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. The winner of that game will advance to the championship game against Stansbury at noon in St. George.
Stansbury took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and followed up with a run in the fourth inning before knocking a huge grand slam homerun and a 6-0 lead.
Bear River’s Kylie Larkin got to first on a sacrifice bunt, moving Oakli Rhodes to third base. Brenna Hinck brought Rhodes home on a sacrifice bunt.
The Bears returned in the sixth inning with sophomore Bailee Trapp smacking an RBI double. It was little too late for the Bears as they were tagged with their first loss of the tournament.

Theron Claire Huggins

Theron Claire Huggins 93, left this world behind on May 16th, 2013 surrounded by love in his home. He was born April 8, 1920 to Joseph Stephen and Naomi Elizabeth Holman Huggins in West Bear River City, Utah; their eleventh and last child. Claire was educated in local schools, and was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He walked his path in life with a purposeful stride; doing all he could to improve the world around him and lighten the load for others. He took pride in his work and appearance. Everything he touched was put in order and beautified. Whether it was a garden, an old acquaintance, or a pair of shoes, his passion for perfection left everything in better repair than he found it. He was friendly and compassionate to those in need. His was the voice of strength and encouragement during a crisis. It seemed he could be counted on to turn any bad situation around irrespective of the time, distance, or trouble it might incur. He was thoughtful and sentimental. He valued honesty and relationships. He was the glue that held his family together through frequent visits, phone calls, and reunions. He did not forget anyone. To his parents and siblings, he was the helper. To his friends he was a trusted confidant. To his wife and children he was truly their hero. Claire Huggins was as fine a man as there ever was.

In 1938 he met and married Mary Dawn Jensen. They were later sealed in the Logan L.D.S. Temple. Together they welcomed eight children into their home. They divorced in 1960. Claire married Ellen Jones Little in 1971 and became a step-father to her two boys.

His work endeavors included being a self-employed farmer, a trucker, driving for Greyhound Bus Line, and serving on the Brigham City Police Department. He served his country during World War II in Luzon, Philippines with the Army. He spent many years as a top salesman for Central Chevrolet and New York Life Insurance Company where he made many friendships. We don’t know how he found the time to be Superman, but we know he was that, too.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ellen; his children: Max (Dot), Linda Beecher (Kent), Millie Bess (Noel) all of Brigham City, UT; Martha Bullock (Dennis) Providence, UT; Dawn Keller (Richard) Pocatello, ID; Gloria Hellewell (Read) Bountiful, UT; Joe (Kristine), Henderson, NV; Mark (Kari) Salt Lake City, UT; step-son John Little (Helen) Las Vegas, NV; and numerous grand and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his step- son Jim Little; his parents; siblings and their spouses: Sara Myrtle Cloward (Ross), Joseph Ernest Huggins (Andrea), Orvil Elmer Huggins, Maggie Maydell Long (John R.), Alta Eliza Huggins, Naomi Rozella Gunnell (Leo), George Ross Huggins, James Arvin Huggins, David Clifford Huggins (Ruth), and Emery Holman Huggins (Helen).

Services will be at 11:00, Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Bear River L.D.S. Church 5870 North 4700 West, Bear River City, Utah.

Visitation will be Monday, May 20, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Rogers and Taylor Funeral Home located at 111 North 100 East, Tremonton, Utah, and again prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 at the Bear River City L.D.S. Church.

Interment will be in the Bear River City Cemetery.

The family extends their thanks to Lance Encanbrack and his team Dan, Mavis, Laurie, Asllin, and Stacey from Intermountain Homecare and Hospice for serving them so compassionately during Claire’s last days.
