Terry Leslie Rees, 69 (a day shy of his 70th birthday), of Palatka, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Putnam Community Medical Center.  A native of Tremonton, Box Elder, Utah, he resided in Palatka the past two years coming here from Saratoga Springs, New York.

Growing up, Terry was an outstanding athlete, having played all sports and even bowled a perfect game.  In addition to his athletic ability, he also was a talented musician and played the violin in the Utah State Youth Symphony.  A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Terry served a LDS North German mission.  A pre-law and language major, Terry graduated from Utah State University and later received an MR Degree from Georgia State University.

He also served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War where he was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal.   Terry worked as a corporate real estate executive with several companies including, General Electric (New York), United Technologies (Connecticut), Abbott Laboratories (Illinois), Collier’s International (Georgia) and with the Staubach Company (Georgia).  Early in his career, he served as a racing representative with Union Oil Company at the Daytona International Speedway.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy Leslie Rees and Mary Beth Richards Rees and a son, Myron Jon Rees.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Alice Bishop Rees of Palatka, three sons; Logan and wife Kaline of Wesley Chapel, Fla., Trevor and wife Karen of Spotsylvania, Va. and Devin of Athens, Ga., a daughter, Melena and husband David Fenn of Harrisville, Utah, nine grandchildren; Lyndon, Carson, Dalton, Nolan, Rowan and Merrick Rees, Aubrey, Preston and Easton Fenn.

Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Palatka 1st Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bishop Clay Davis presiding.  Interment with military honors by the U.S. Army will follow at Paran Cemetery in Grandin.  The family will receive friends Saturday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services.

4-H Happenings
4-H does contests in cooking, public speaking, talent, fashion and demonstrations.  Doing contests is a great way to improve and showcase skills.  All contests are split up into three age divisions; third-fifth grades, sixth-eighth grades and ninth-twelfth grades (the group competes at state level).  The majority of contests are held in June with the exception of the talent contest in May.  Register for 4-H to participate.

Saturday Report

Branson Fonnesbeck placed 5th in the shot put with a toss of 45′ 5′.  The winning toss was 49′ 7.75″. Courtney Morgan finished 8th in the girls’ discus with a toss of 102′ 0.5″. The winner recorded a toss of 126′ 9.25″.

Sophomore Whitney Wilcox took second in the 100 meter finals with a time of 12.50. Senior Kayla Shakespeare of Cedar ran it in 12.26. Wilcox also took second in the 400 meter finals with a time of 57.66. Cedar junior Aimee Bryson came in ahead of her with a time of 56.75.

The Bears also took second in the 4×100 meter relay. The team of Candice Buttars, Misty Fonnesbeck, Tara Christensen and Wilcox finished behind Cedar by half a second. The Redmen came in at 49.69 while the Bears were 50.19.

As a team, the girls were in 7th place, the boys are in 21st.

Friday Late Report.

In the 200 meter dash for girls, Candice Buttars recorded a 26.06, which was good enough for 11th overall, but just out of qualification for the finals. Whitney Wilcox came in at 27.14, for 15th overall.

Friday Early Report

Whitney Wilcox qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash as the #6 runner. She had a time of 12.89. The top time was 12.44. Candice Buttars came in at 13.26 for 16th place and Tara Christensen ran 13.36 for 17th. The Bear River A team took the #2 seed into the finals of the 3A 4×100 meter relay.

The team of Candice Buttars, Tara Christensen, Sadie Croney, Wilcox and Misty Fonnesbeck turned in a time of 50.26. The top time was 49.19. In the girls 400 meter, Wilcox advanced to the finals as the #2 seed with a time of 58.45. The top seed came in at 57.93. Brett Smart just missed qualifying in the 110 meter hurdles by .24 seconds. He came in 10th place, one spot out of the finals with a time of 16.24. The top time was 14.67. He also finished 9th in the high jump at 5′ 9″. The winner was at 6′ 3″. He took 14th in the 300 hurdles at 42.96. The top time was 39.34.

Candice Buttars took 8th in the long jump at 16′ 2.5″. Terrell Womack took 17th at 14’11.5″. The winner’s jump was 17′ 9.75″. In the girls’ shot, Womack took third overall with a toss of 37′ 2.75″. Courtney Morgan took 5th at 35′ .5″. The top throw was 43′ 10.5″. Branson Fonnesbeck took 15th overall in the discuss at 113′ 3″. The winner was at 160′ 8.25″.

In the girls 100 meter hurdles, Rylee Perry finished 18th overall with a time of 18.82. The winner’s time was 15.71. The girls’ medlay relay team of Wilcox, Christensen, Croney, Fonnesbeck and Buttars took 11th place at 4:31.69. The top time was 4:03.22.

Garland City will hold a public hearing to discuss the project determined to be applied for in the 2013 CDBG Small Cities Program as follows: The Family Resource Center $100,000 CDBG funding will be used to modify and update the building located at 1386 South Main Street in Garland to house a crisis nursery, a teen center, a family shelter, an employment center and communal offices and meeting rooms.
